Programme

Day 1 Programme

Synopsis: Manjinder is a leader, entrepreneur and winner of an Asian Woman of Achievement Award for Science. In this talk she discusses her achievements in the NHS and private sector, her approach to leadership and how to inspire colleagues and teams.

Time: 14.30pm
Speaker: Manjinder Virk

Synopsis: Jonathan and his team recently won an IBMS Award for “Best Use of Research, Innovation or Technology” for a pioneering pilot study to assess the safety and viability of transporting clinical blood products for transfusion via drone. Jonathan will discuss the challenges overcome in the project and the future of transporting by drone.

Time: 14.55pm
Speaker: Jonathan Boxshall

Synopsis: Alice will be speaking about the journey to improve the blood culture pathway at Winchester. Winchester is a spoke site with limited microbiology services, so Alice will talk through the changes they have made, and are in the process of implementing, to ensure patients’ blood culture samples are incubated and managed as quickly as possible.

Time: 15.20pm
Speaker: Alice Goring

Synopsis: Now that most of the ISO 15189 transition assessments have been completed, Alyson will look back over the work that has been done and look forward to UKAS’ future plans.

Time: 15.45pm
Speaker: Alyson Bryant

Synopsis:This session addresses the challenges pathology laboratories face using traditional systems by building practical solutions, such as predictive stock control and integrated lot validation. We delve into the journey of developing an optimal inventory system with industry expertise. This session is a collaborative platform where professionals share their knowledge and experience to tackle common inefficiencies in laboratory workflows. Benefit from decades of biomedical experience as the speakers provide educational insights into inventory optimisation, predictive stock level management and increased operational efficiency, making you feel part of a community striving for excellence.

Time: 16.10pm
Speakers: Andrea Rhodes, Nigel Coles

Synopsis: One of Nicki’s biggest joys is sharing interesting morphology cases with the lab team and post-graduate students. Bitesize Morphology was created during the COVID pandemic as a way to deliver online training to the wider haematology team across her pathology network, and has continued ever since. Here she brings a special episode of Bitesize Morphology to the Biomedical Scientist Live.

Time: 16.35pm
Speaker: Nicki Lawrence

Day 2 Programme

Synopsis: Chris uses a recent cover feature he wrote for The Biomedical Scientist magazine as a launchpad for a fascinating talk on previous pandemics, the potential threat of avian influenza and what else could potentially cause the next pandemic.

Time: 14.30pm
Speaker: Christopher Ring

Synopsis: AI in diagnostics promises to improve lab operations, but challenges remain. This session covers CrelioHealth’s AI journey, practical use cases in diagnostics and patient care, and the hurdles preventing full AI adoption in healthcare. We explore AI as a tool that complements human expertise, not one that replaces it.

Time: 14.55pm
Speaker: Husain Rampurawala, Surabhi Khare

Synopsis: Every year Serious Hazards of Transfusion – the UK’s independent, professionally led haemovigilance scheme – releases a report analysing anonymised information on adverse events and reactions in blood transfusion. In this session Vera, Nikki and Victoria look at the latest report and discuss the key themes and takeaway messages.

Time: 15.20pm
Speakers: Vera Rosa, Nikki Swarbrick, Victoria Tuckley

Synopsis: Why test for group B strep (GBS) infection? A look at the current practice and challenges, an introduction to molecular testing for GBS and an overview of real-world data using a molecular GBS assay and its application.

Time: 15.45pm
Speakers: Douglas Kirkwood

Synopsis: Pathology services in Dorset have been through significant transformations, including the new-build pathology hub on the Bournemouth site. Director for One Dorset Pathology Stephen Harding talks us through the journey.

Time: 16.10pm
Speaker: Stephen Harding

Synopsis: A look at the current global threat of latent TB infection, the immune response to TB, an introduction to IGRA technology, diagnosing TB in the immunosuppressed and an overview of ELISPOT technology and the T-SPOT.TB test. This will be followed by a walk-through of the suite automation solutions that simplify Revvity’s ELISPOT, the T-SPOT.TB test and the benefits that they bring to the test’s workflow.

Time: 16.35pm
Speakers: Tom Jackson-Soutter, Yasmin Malik

Synopsis: The Big Question is a regular feature in The Biomedical Scientist magazine, where we put a timely question to three experts. Here the features makes its way off the page and into a live session, with our panel asked five vital questions on sustainability.

Time: 17.00pm
Speakers: Sheri Scott, Claire Atkinson, Leah Riley
